Applying a Theme to Your Desktop

Changing the Theme
 theme is a background, plus colors, screensavers, icons, fonts, set of sounds and mouse pointers. Changing the theme allows you to personalize the appearance of your desktop. The desktop’s appearance is governed by a Control Panel called Display that contains the Display Properties Window. (Sounds and Mouse Pointers are contained in separate Control Panels.)
To open the Display Properties window:
  1. On any blank area on your desktop, right-click.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. The Display Properties window will open.

Replacing a Theme with a theme provided by Windows
  1. In the display properties dialogue box, click the Themes tab.
  2. Click the drop down arrow to display a list of available themes.
  3. Click the desktop theme you want to use.
      The sample window will allow you to preview the theme you have just selected.
4.   Click OK

Changing the Desktop Background
  1. In the display properties dialogue box, click the Desktop tab. The background window lists background designs that you can choose to decorate your desktop.
  2. Click the desktop theme you want to use.
      The monitor graphic displayed in the Desktop window will allow you to preview   the theme you have just selected.
  1. Click OK.
Note: You can select your own graphic to be the desktop background by choosing the browse button. Browse to picture you have stored on your computer.
·         A shortcut for making any picture your desktop background is to right-click on the picture file, and then select Set as Desktop Background.

Changing the Screen Saver and Specifying Settings
  1. In the display properties dialogue box, click the Screen Saver tab. The screen Saver dropdown displays screen savers that you can set to run after a specified period of inactivity.
      The monitor graphic displayed in the Desktop window will allow you to preview   the screen saver you have just selected.
  1. Click OK.
Note: To change the way a screen saver runs, click Settings. Each screen saver has its own relevant settings.




Changing the Screen Appearance
  1. Open the Display Properties window by right-clicking on an empty space on the desktop and clicking on properties.
  2. Click the Appearance Tab.
  3. Click the dropdown arrow under Windows and buttons to display available styles. Click the style you want to choose. The available styles depend on the current theme.
  4. Click the dropdown arrow under Color scheme to display the available color schemes. Click the color scheme you want to choose. The available color schemes depend on the style you select.
  5. Click the dropdown arrow under Font Size to display the available sizes. Click the size you want to use. The available font sizes depend on the color scheme you select.
  6. Click OK to have your changes take effect.
Note: As you make selections, they will be displayed in the graphic located at the top of the appearance screen.

Changing the Screen Resolution
A screen’s resolution is measured in pixels, with a pixel representing a single dot. Switching to a higher resolution allows you to see more items on the screen at one time, but it makes it item appear smaller. When there are more pixels on the screen, the refresh rate (number of times the display is updated) is slower, and flickering may be more noticeable.
To change the screen resolution:
1.      Open the Display Properties window by right-clicking on an empty space on          the desktop and clicking on properties.
2.      Click the Settings Tab.
3.      Drag the slider to select the resolution you want to use.
4.      Click OK.

Changing the Colors
Color Quality enables you to change the number of potential colors displayed on your monitor and available to applications. The more colors, the crisper and truer the images, especially with photographs and movies.
To change the color setting:
  1. Open the Display Properties window by right-clicking on an empty space on the desktop and clicking on properties.
2.      Click the Settings Tab.
3.      Click the dropdown arrow under Color Quality to display the available choices. Click the color setting you want to use.
4.      Click OK.
Note: Changes you make to the color settings will affect all the users set up on your computer.
Note: If you have games or other programs that need to display 256 colors, you can select it temporarily. Right-click the program’s icon on the desktop, or on the Start menu, then click Properties – Compatibility tab. Select the Run in 256 colors check box. Whenever you close the program, your screen reverts to its original color quality.
