Shortcuts
A shortcut is an empty file that points to another file. It is a quick way to open an application or document.
To create a shortcut on the desktop:
1. Place the mouse anywhere on the desktop, pointing to a blank area.
2. Click the right mouse button (Right-Click) to open a quick menu.
3. Choose New and then choose Shortcut and click once.
4. Browse to the desired application, file or folder. Click the NEXT button.
5. Type a new name for the shortcut or keep the default name. Click the FINISH button.

Note: Deleting a shortcut does not delete the program or file connected to that shortcut.
The Taskbar
The taskbar is the bar that contains the Start button and appears by default at the bottom of the desktop. You can click the taskbar buttons to switch between programs. You can also hide the taskbar, move it to the sides or top of the desktop, and customize it in other ways.
Locking and Unlocking the Taskbar
By default the taskbar is locked and cannot be moved or resized until it is unlocked.
To unlock the taskbar:
- Right-click an empty space on the menu bar.
- In the menu a P check appears beside Lock the Taskbar when the taskbar is locked.
- Click Lock the Taskbar to unlock the taskbar.
Note: To relock the task bar repeat the above.
Moving the Taskbar
You can move the taskbar to a different edge of your desktop.
To move your taskbar:
- Place the mouse on an empty area of the taskbar.
- Drag the taskbar to the left, right, top or bottom of your screen.
- The taskbar will move to the new location.
Resizing the Taskbar
You can increase or decrease the width of the taskbar. You may want to do this to provide more space for buttons for open windows or icons in the notification area.
To resize the taskbar:
- Position the mouse pointer over the edge of the taskbar until it changes to a two-sided arrow.
- Drag the two-sided arrow until the taskbar is the size you want.
- The taskbar changes to the new size.
Note: If you cannot find your taskbar, you may have accidently resized it to a thin line at the edge of the screen. To find it, place your mouse pointer on the edge of the screen where you last saw your taskbar. If the pointer changes to a two-sided arrow, drag the mouse to increase the size of the taskbar.
Change the Taskbar Settings
You can customize the taskbar settings to suit your needs.
To Change the taskbar settings:
- Right-click any empty area on the taskbar. A menu will appear.
- Click properties. The Taskbar and the Start menu Properties dialogue box will appear.
- You can click an option to turn the option on or off. The option is on if a P appears in the box.
- Options you can change:
- You can lock and unlock the taskbar.
- You can auto-hide the taskbar. This option hides the taskbar when you are not using it.
- You can keep the taskbar on top of other windows.
- You can group similar task buttons. This option will display all the buttons for a program as a single button if the taskbar gets crowded.
- You can show Quick Launch. This option displays icons to give you quick access to Internet Explorer and Media Player. You can add other icons to this area.
- Within the notification area, you can choose to show the clock. You can also hide inactive notification icons (those which you have not used in a while.
5. Don’t forget to click OK to have your changes take effect.
